Map and Base
Both maps run three lanes plus a jungle. What changes is what the base is called and how the lanes are named.
| Concept | Honor of Kings | Wild Rift | What differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Final objective | Crystal | Nexus | Destroying it ends the game in both. In HoK you must bring down at least one high ground tower before the Crystal can be attacked. |
| Last tower before the base | High Ground Tower | Inhibitor Turret | Both spawn Super Minions in that lane once destroyed. In Wild Rift this is the third turret standing just outside the base. |
| Upper solo lane | Clash Lane | Baron Lane (listed as "Top" on Wild Rift Hub) | A fighter or tank 1v1 in both games. In HoK, kill the sprite at the nearby warp point early so the teleport is ready when you need it. |
| Lower duo lane | Farm Lane | Dragon Lane ("Duo" on Wild Rift Hub) | Marksman plus support in both. HoK adds a gold object in the middle of the lane that pays the whole team when destroyed. |
| Getting vision | Bushes and skills (no wards) | Wards / Sweeping Lens | Every Wild Rift player carries a free ward, and where you place it is a mind game. HoK has no wards: throw a skill into the bush and watch for a hit. |
Objectives and Buffs
HoK's bosses spawn early on fixed timers; Wild Rift revolves around a rotating set of elemental dragons. Even when a boss plays the same role, the reward takes a different shape.
| Concept | Honor of Kings | Wild Rift | What differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early team-wide buff | Tyrant | Dragon (four elements) | Tyrant spawns at 4:00 and gives everyone Chain Lightning on their attacks. Wild Rift's dragons each buff a different team-wide stat depending on the element. |
| Minion-powered push | Overlord | Rift Herald | Overlord spawns at 2:00 and turns your next two waves into Dragon Vanguards. Herald spawns at 6:00 and drops the Eye of the Herald, which sends it charging into a turret. |
| Mid-game major boss | Shadow Tyrant / Shadow Overlord | Baron Nashor | At 10:00 both HoK bosses are replaced by their Shadow versions. Baron appears from the mid game on and grants Hand of Baron: more AD/AP and heavily empowered nearby minions. |
| Late-game decider | Tempest Dragon | Elder Dragon | Tempest spawns at 20:00 and shields every living teammate for 20–50% of max HP. Elder makes your attacks execute enemies below a health threshold. |
Progression: Items, Arcana/Runes, Spells
Pre-game setup follows different logic in Arcana and Runes, and once the match starts the biggest gap is where you are allowed to shop.
| Concept | Honor of Kings | Wild Rift | What differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-game stat bonuses | Arcana | Runes | Arcana are fixed bonuses slotted 10 each in red, blue and green, 30 in total. Runes come from four trees — Domination, Precision, Resolve, Sorcery — as a keystone plus minor runes. |
| Shared skills picked before the match | Battle Spells (Summoner Spells on the HoK Hub list page) | Summoner Spells | HoK has 11, unlocked by account level; Wild Rift has 9. A shared name does not mean shared numbers — the next three rows are examples. |
| Short-range blink | Flash (120s cooldown) | Flash (150s cooldown) | HoK's Flash unlocks at account level 19. Until then, Sprint, available from level 1, fills the same role. |
| The jungler's spell | Smite (30s cooldown) | Smite (10s cooldown) | HoK's Smite deals 1,500 true damage plus a 1-second stun, and you cannot buy jungle items without it. Wild Rift's deals 600 true damage and heals you when used on a monster. |
| Finisher spell | Execute | Ignite | Execute deals instant true damage equal to 16% of the target's missing health. Ignite is 5 seconds of true damage over time with Grievous Wounds, used for early kill pressure. |
| Boots | Upgraded boots (flat 700G) | Boots (from 400G) | In HoK, any pair you own can be swapped for a different pair for free after a 5-minute cooldown. In Wild Rift you upgrade the 400G Boots of Speed to tier 2, and tier 3 unlocks at 10:00. |
Roles and Lanes
HoK calls them heroes and Wild Rift calls them champions, but the five roles are nearly identical. One catch: in HoK, "Roam" is the name of a role, while in Wild Rift it describes an action.
| Concept | Honor of Kings | Wild Rift | What differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| The teammate who enables the others | Roam | Support | HoK's Roam buys the Knowledge Gem (300G) first and moves across the whole map. Wild Rift's support stands beside the marksman and handles the wards. |
| Ranged carry | Marksman (Farm Lane) | Marksman / ADC (Dragon Lane) | Same job. HoK marksmen can shop in lane and rarely need to leave it; in Wild Rift every purchase means a trip back to the fountain. |
| Jungler | Jungle (assassin / fighter) | Jungle | HoK's jungle items require Smite and cut your damage to minions by 25% until 10:00 in exchange for better rewards from monsters. Wild Rift's jungler is also expected to cover every lane. |
Match Flow and Vocabulary
Match length and the level that unlocks your ultimate both differ, so "early game" refers to a different stretch of the clock in each game.
| Concept | Honor of Kings | Wild Rift | What differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Returning to base | Recall | Recall | In HoK you can buy anywhere, so recalling is mostly about healing. In Wild Rift the shop is fountain-only, and choosing when to go back is a skill in itself. |
| Match length | 10–15 minutes | 15–20 minutes | HoK reaches level 4 in under two minutes and Tempest Dragon at 20:00. In Wild Rift the Rift Herald arrives at 6:00 — the whole early game sits later on the clock. |
| Ultimate unlock | Level 4 | Level 5 | Level 4 is HoK's first real window to make a play. Wild Rift unlocks the ultimate at level 5 and ranks it up at 9 and 13. |
| Last hitting | CS (about 1.5x gold) | Last hit / CS | In HoK, landing the killing blow pays roughly 1.5x what a minion dying next to you does. In Wild Rift, missed CS costs most of the gold, and that gap shows up directly in items. |
Habits to Fix First When You Switch
From Honor of Kings to Wild Rift
If you come from HoK, the first wall is shopping. Your gold piles up, but you cannot spend it where you stand. You have to be at the fountain, so get in the habit of shoving the wave in, then recalling.
Next, wards. HoK has nothing like them, so you will forget to place them at first. Drop one in the river bush before Dragon or Baron spawns, and clear enemy wards with the Sweeping Lens. That alone removes most of the "why do I get ganked every time" feeling.
Your clock needs resetting too. In HoK, 4:00 is when tower protection drops and the first push begins; in Wild Rift the Rift Herald does not show up until 6:00 and your ultimate waits for level 5. Force a fight in the second minute on HoK instinct and you will be brawling without your ultimate.
From Wild Rift to Honor of Kings
Coming from Wild Rift, your first job is the opposite: never stop shopping. The moment gold comes in, open the shop — while walking, while dead, wherever you are. Once you think of recall as a heal button rather than a shopping trip, HoK's tempo starts to make sense.
With no wards, get used to checking bushes by throwing a skill in and watching for a hit. When an enemy vanishes from the minimap, assume they are heading your way. With no way to leave vision behind, your pings carry more of the load.
Every objective comes early. Overlord at 2:00, Tyrant at 4:00, and both swap to their Shadow versions at 10:00. Boots cost a flat 700G, and five minutes after buying a pair you can swap to a different one for free, so change them to match your lane opponent.
