Popular Mel builds in game

Taken from the in-game loadout screen as of 2026-10-07. The pick count and win rate are shown exactly as the game reports them.

Build 1MidWin rate 51.89%Picks 7,911

AP and Magic Penetration build, more popular with a higher win rate

When you play mid lane (same items as build 2)

The items and summoner spells are the same as build 2, and this build is ahead on both popularity (7,911) and win rate (51.89%). Magic Penetration totals +38% and +33, so magic damage gets through more easily against enemies who stack Magic Resistance. Against enemies below 40% HP, Infinity Orb makes abilities and empowered attacks Critically Strike for 20% bonus damage, which helps finish off weakened enemies. Zhonya's Hourglass makes you invulnerable for 2.5 seconds when used, but you cannot act during that time (90s cooldown).

Build 2MidWin rate 51.19%Picks 2,839

Same AP and Magic Penetration build as build 1

When you play mid lane (same items as build 1)

The items and summoner spells are the same as build 1, while its popularity (2,839) and win rate (51.19%) are both lower than build 1's. Total Ability Power is +560, and Rabadon's Deathcap's Overkill raises AP by a further 30%. Luden's Echo makes your next damaging ability or empowered basic attack deal magic damage to the target and up to 4 other nearby enemies (9s cooldown). If fewer than 4 nearby enemies are hit, the primary target takes an extra 20 + 1.2% Ability Power damage for each one short. Cryptbloom restores HP to allies when a champion you damaged within 3 seconds dies (60s cooldown).

Mel Strengths

  • ✓Long-range poke and pressure from a safe position
  • ✓Versatile support tools: a projectile-reflecting barrier and a snare

Mel Weaknesses

  • ×No mobility; fragile against assassin burst and close combat
  • ×Heavy mana costs; careless casting runs her dry fast

Mel Early Game

Early on, lean on your long skill range to harass and farm from a safe position. Manage your mana so it does not run out, keep the pressure on, and take lane priority.

Mel Mid Game

Shove the lane quickly with your strong wave clear, then set up vision and positions around Dragon and Herald with your team. When a skirmish breaks out, support allies with the snare and the reflecting barrier.

Mel Late Game

Before the teamfight starts, focus on poking down enemy HP from long range. Do not step up too far; keep dealing damage from the very back, where you can still protect your team.

Mel Teamfights

The moment your tank engages, fire Ult into every enemy carrying Overwhelm stacks and break their formation. Stay alert for enemy assassins and divers, and cover each other with your team.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

Poor positioning and forcing close combat

Giving up your range advantage to step into the enemy and force damage is a mistake to avoid. Mel has no mobility and dies instantly once the enemy closes in. The baseline is long-range harass and support with the Skill 3 snare. From the safest spot at the back, keep applying pressure with Ult from Level 5 on.

Mel Combos

Basic Trade

Stack Overwhelm with the barrage from Skill 1 and pin them with the 1.2s snare from Skill 3. Use Skill 2 to reflect their projectiles.

Mel's attacks and abilities apply and refresh stacks of Overwhelm for 5 second(s) each time they deal damage.
Overwhelm:
- Stores 60 (60 + 8%AP) plus 3 (3 + 0.5%AP) damage per stack of magic damage.
- When applied, if the stored amount exceeds the target's combined shields and current HP, they are executed.
Projectile Burst:
- Fires 3 extra projectiles on her next attack after using an ability.
- Each projectile deals 3 magic damage (3–33 (Lv) + 3%AP).
- This effect can stack up to 9 extra projectiles.
Overwhelm deals only 60% damage with the first stack when used against minions.

Rebuttal

  • Cooldown32/29/26/23s → 38/36/34/32s

Our take

Shimmering Strike hits champions for less while its minion modifier climbs from 75% to 90%, so Mel's wave clear actually improves. The split is deliberate: less pressure on the enemy laner, the same ability to hold the lane. The bigger change is Rebuttal, whose rank 4 cooldown stretches from 23s to 32s, ending the habit of keeping it available almost constantly. Each cast has to be earned now, which turns the ability into a much sharper read on the opponent.

Nerf

Searing Brilliance (Passive)

  • AP ratio per stack applied to the execute HP threshold0.6% → 0.5%

Solar Snare (E)

  • Snare duration and direct-hit base damage reduced

Golden Eclipse (R)

  • Bonus damage AP ratio3% → 2.5%

Our take

Mel closed games out by stacking her passive to raise the execute threshold and then finishing anyone left at low health. With the AP ratio per stack reduced, that threshold climbs more slowly, so building AP no longer widens the kill window the way it did. A shorter snare gives her less time to convert once she does catch someone, and with the bonus damage ratio cut as well, one missed follow-up is now often enough for the target to get away.

  • Mel Medarda is the presumed heir to the Medarda family, once the most powerful house in Noxus. She carries herself as a graceful aristocrat, but underneath she is a formidable politician who sets out to learn everything about everyone she meets. After an encounter with the enigmatic Black Rose, Mel discovers how deep her mother's deceptions run and finds herself facing a situation that may be beyond her. With newly awakened magic at her side, Mel sails home in search of answers. Plenty of people would see her inner light smothered, but Mel's spirit never bends.
  • Mel releases on March 13 at 09:01 JST.
  • This is a champion release rather than a balance change, and she does not unlock the moment the patch lands — she becomes available at the time listed above. In the first days after release, few players will recognise her abilities on sight, and it is easy to die without understanding what actually did the damage. If you run into her in ranked, hold your distance for the first exchange and work out where the damage is coming from before committing.
